In the early to mid '50s our 4-H Tractor Maintenance club took a trip to the Oliver plant in South Bend. It's been a long time and my memory has developed CRS.

Can anyone tell me what Oliver built there?

Thanks,

Stan

The South Bend plant build all of the tillage equipment and the Super 44/440 and the 99/super 99 tractors. I cant remember right off hand if the 950/990/995 tractors were built there or if they got moved to Charles City.

I believe the county jail sits on the site now. I have to ask my friend he grew up there and just moved to New Mexico.

At one time there 2 plants in South Bend. Plant # 1 did the tillage equipment plus later on other items as well as other Oliver plants closed (Springfield Oh And Shelbyville, Il) South Bend #2 was the plant where the tractors and power units were built. Yes, early 950,990/995 tractors were built at Plant #2.

The jails , police station, fire station on Sample street are all on former Studebaker land. The tractors were built at the Oliver plant on Walnut street. That building is now used as an ice skating rink. Plows, disc harrows, and other tillage machines were built at the Chapin street plant along with, row crop planters, balers and other hay tools, corn pickers, and cotton strippers, when the Shelbyville IL plant was closed. The only original building left there is the power house which has been restored on the outside and renovated inside for the headquarters of Rose Brick and Material. The Oliver Memorial is in front of the power house. Two other companies are nearby on former Oliver land. The city is working to get some more companies on the remaining open land.

[i:c86137aaa4]Sorry about the double post[/i:c86137aaa4], also just remembered, the last few Minneapolis Moline corn shellers, and White single gun sprinkler systems (few sold), only built one season.

I knew it was Oliver or Studebaker. He worked at the jail for awhile so I recall him saying something about it. I live about 45 minutes away from SB.
