Just went to the john deere dealer today for 80W-90 gear oil and the price on a five gallon bucket was 136.00. O'rielys auto had the same oil for 61$. I bought the O'rielys oil and then returned the John Deere oil. Has anyone ran into this? I feel this is highway robbery. it was for my 1550 final drive

Seems to be that way with brand names. The Agco dealer handles the Agco branded oil,but they have off brand too for a lot less.

If you bought the identical containers with the identical contents at both stores, then yes, it would be robbery.

But, what folks generally fail to realize is additives are what cost money. 80w-90 is not the same 80w-90 everywhere. Many times the cost to manufacture a premium oil (like the John Deere) is close to the cost you can buy brand X just barely meets the specs kind of oil off the shelf.

So the question is, do you want an oil which likely barely meets the GL-5 spec or do you want a premium oil? Not saying if you pour it in your tractor, that you're going to blow it up in 10 hours, it's a question of if you want the best which will give you added protection under harsh conditions, or just a ho-hum oil.

I agree with e it comes down to the additive package. I used to be a partsman at our local JD dealer and 4-5 yrs ago the GL-5 was $80-90 so like everything else it has gone up. Yeah it seems like highway robbery, but in reality its the oil companies making the majority of that $136. Our markup on oil was 5-10% and that was with a bulk order discount we always ordered it by the semi load. The margin was even less for stores that didn't place a big order. On the plus side if you should be able to go several hundred hrs on one final drive change with the good stuff.
