Recently acquired a 1855 Oliver with a gas engine.
What are the good and bad about this model of tractor?
Also what size disc is this capable of pulling?

We used to pull a 21 foot disk with a 2-85 white diesel, a 1855would be comparable, you didn't go very fast, 2nd direct is all it wanted, a little smaller would be better. We are in heavy black dirt, in sand it would probebly pull a lot easier, depends what soil you have.

Don"t know the specifics on an 1855 gas, but as far as pulling a tandem disc harrow goes, you need 5-8 pto hp per foot of disc. If you want to go slow and just scratch the dirt go with 5 hp per foot (wasting your time). If you want to get any depth and speed out of the disc and not kill the old tractor, you need 8 hp per foot.

Don't know if I'd agree with that, that's saying 8hp per foot would be around a 10 foot disc, that's not right, you can pull a 10 foot disk with a 88 oliver, and with a 1855 with a 10 foot disc, you'd pull it like a plow not a disc. I'd say it pull a 15-18 foot disc pretty easy, and you'd go plenty deep.

Lol... We"re talking about a 310 gas engine that had 90 hp when it was new. You"ll hurt it trying to pull an 18" disc at any real depth running at any real speed. Sure, like the other guy said, hook it up and run 2.5 mph. Lol. Waste of time and fuel. I"d look for a nice 12-14" disc so the tractor is happy turning some dirt at 5 mph.

I don't know, guess its whatever he wants to do, in light soil it would pull a 18 footer easy. Ten foot is hardly gonna be past the tires, only about 2ft on each side, it isn't gonna look right. We used to pull a 45 foot Krause with a 4694 case up tell a Few years ago, that was only 220 pto hp, which is under 5hp per foot, and would pull it plenty deep in heavy black soil at around 4.5mph, now we put the 4900 Massey on it, and we can rip the disc apart, we don't even try putting on the 9400 Deere or 435 case, or we won't have a disc left. Hope you have luck with your 1855, should work good.

Just disced 10 r 12 acres last night with 2-70 and a 251 10 foot disc on plowed ground running 3rd over. Was making it work. 1855 should handle a 12 foot disc o/k maybe even 14 but in my opinion that would be about the limit,as far as discing plowed ground goes.

we had an 1850 gas, same engine only with a two speed not three speed. It was a nice match to a 14 ft disc, it had enough speed to turn some dirt and like as mentioned below it wasn't pulling the guts out of a 40 year old tractor. P.S. make sure you have a gas tanker close by,ours could burn a tank in 4 hours of heavy work (with a short flame peeking out the stack)
