Super 55 steering gear bearings

The steering wheel on my 55 goes up and down when I turn it so I guess that means I need to replace the bearings. Are there 2 or 3 bearings? It looks like there is one just under the steering wheel and one on the bottom end of the steering shaft with part of it inside the gear housing but is there another one about 3/4 of the way down the shaft inside the tube? Does the whole steering gear assembly need to be removed from the tractor to replace the bearings or can the top one be replaced without removing it all? I suppose it makes sense to remove the whole thing and replace all bearings anyway.

I just did one. Take it off the tractor so you can clean it out. There are three bearings. The bottom one with a cup in the housing, The same bearing on the top side of the worm with the cup in the bottom of the upper tube, and the bearing under the steering wheel. The bearings are hyatt bearings and replacements are available. Look for Ford steering gear parts, the lower bearings are the same. I got the metal bearings not the plastic looking ones. The one under the steering wheel I got off an ebay seller. Make sure to time the two shafts properly when you assemble the gears.I replaced both of the lower bearing cups since they come as a set with the bearings. I also found new seals for the sides where the shafts come out to the first arm. Have fun with your "55"!

The bottom of the steering shaft on my Super 55 was damaged and someone tried to fix it by machining the end and putting a "home grown" bearing set up on it. I ended up getting a F*rd steering shaft, cutting off the worm gear and having the original Oliver shaft welded to it. That's because the Ford shaft is a bigger diameter. It worked well. So if you find the steering shaft shot, there is a way out.
