Anyone recore a radiator lately?

Well, I guess the subject says it all. Anyone have a radiator done lately? Just pulled the one from our 1855 today. Also gonna have them check out the oil cooler for the over/under. I think it was just the hoses leaking, but for the little it'll take to check it out it'll be worth it.

I'm just wondering how hard we gotta hang onto the wallet. Dad's gonna bring it in on Monday.

While I have the hood and side panels off, I need to replace the secondary light switch I installed a couple years ago for the extra headlights, and I can also remove some other wireing I had in there for our Fox 3000 (home made electric spout flapper) which we no longer use. Also gotta find where the fuel leaks out when I have the fender tanks full. Gonna look into the transmissions neutral safety switch too. Good thing the fields are way too wet to touch for a few weeks yet...

I recently had one done for a '71 Chevy C90 with a Detroit 6-71 in it. The fan came apart and went through the radiator. It was a complete recore and it cost me about $1000. I didn't set the radiator on a scale, but the whole thing must weigh over 250 lbs. I had to drive about an hour and a half to get to this guy because he's the closest one to me. All the others have closed shop or refuse to do true radiator work. He's a true craftsman though, because he's got people sending him radiators from all over the U.S., including California. This guy has made some hand-built brass radiators for some pre-Model T cars that are museum quality.

I had one done for an IH 504 diesel last year- little smaller than your 1855, probably. $650. The guy has gone into scrapping and hulk-hauling as a sideline, because there isn't enough radiator business left these days to make a living. Most cars now have plastic or aluminum radiators, a throw-away item.

FYI Don: They had a kit to put the neutral safety switch on the clutch petal.

Our 1755 had that kit installed. After seeing the one on the 1600 last year though it doesn't look too difficult. I probably should have just pulled that clutch switch off the 1755 last year before we got rid of it.

I had the radiator recored for my 1850 a couple years ago Al"s Rebuilding in New London, they did an excellent job, IIRC the cost was $550. Not sure where you are but would be about 20 min. from the fox valley.

Dad's gonna bring it to a shop in kimberly. Used them a couple years ago on our 285's radiator and we were happy with it.
