310 with broken crankshaft

I have a 310 diesel with what I assume to be a broken crankshaft as the front pulley will turn while the flywheel will not. I cannot distinguish any external cracks in the crankcase. Is this worth looking into for a rebuild? Are parts/crankshaft available?

I"d be questioning how good the block is. Might be ok, might not. If the crank is that far gone, I"d put more money on the block being junk than it being ok. Until you tear into, you won"t know. It would have to be dang cheap or the rest of the tractor be perfect before I"d personally consider jumping into it. My $.02

"as the front pulley will turn while the flywheel will not."

Indicative, but not definitive. Does the retaining nut rotate? I try not to assume any more than absolutely necessary.

I have experienced a broken crank (Landrover, not a tractor). It was down to either wrong radius at journal-to-web, improper surface hardening or just turned too small (I thought the first option was most likely at the time). Engine ran for some time with the crank broken and no problem -just replaced the crank. But you will not know until you check it out. Possibility the block needs line-boring, too.

Does the engine have the taper lock front pulley? If not we had some front pulleys that would turn band the crank would not because the key had sheared off. Also if you need to tear it down check the alignment of the main bearing bores. They had replacement caps which were much stronger.

Thanks for the comments. I will have to check to see which front pulley it has as it is a later model unit from the mid-70's. I will keep you posted as I get the engine out and torn down.

Had a 88 diesel with broken crank it would start and run but what a racket when running . Is it possible the flywheel flange or bolts are broken.
