1650 Start Issue

Today it is 31 degrees. I tried to start my 1650 diesel (late direct injection). The engine started but stopped right after. When I tried to start it again, batteries ran down. I put the charger on for about 30 minutes and got good charge. Batteries are new last September. Now, I do not get any sound or rotation when I try to start it. I have good 12 volts at the starter. Only issue I can find is when I turn the key to run, I get 12 volts at the small solenoid terminal, like key is in the start position. Is that normal? I put the starter on the bench, connected the charger and jumped across terminals and it turns good. But when it is on the tractor and I jump across terminals, I get no rotation or sounds from it. It may still be worn out and not working when I put a load on it.

Try testing or replacing the solenoid. If you"re short-circuiting the solenoid terminals, you are bypassing the switch inside that closes to deliver current to the starter. You may have a wiring issue in the harness between ignition switch and solenoid or a bad ignition switch.
