Oliver 5th wheel wagon

does anyone have pictures they could share? This is a high arch wagon and i think I have only ever seen one. Were many produced?

Over the years Oliver/Electric Wheel Co. built several models of fifth wheel wagons. The auto steer wagons were the more popular in the north and the fifth wheel more populer in the south, where they were used under cotton wagons.

If you went down into the bootheal of Missouri, and worked your way south, you could fine lots of those wagons parked around cotton gins. They are not used anymore to move cotton. Now days the farmers build big cotton piles on the end of the field, or use the million dollar cotton harvesters that build and compress the big round or square bales right on the machine itself. Then they use big tandem axle trucks to pick up and move the cotton to the mills.

Sorry, I don't have a way of posting pictures of the wagon running gears. I think Harvester built some fifth wheel wagons, also.

During the 1940s and 1950s Oliver purchased their wagon running gears from Electric Wheel. The 5th wheel design was one of several models made by Electric Wheel and sold to Oliver and some other companies. The 5th wheel design was not popular. As an Oliver dealer in Iowa at that time, we had only one and it set on the lot about a year and we finally sold it at a deep discount. The arched axle resulted in the grain bed height being several inches higher than the more comon wagon design.

I"m looking for some myself. I"ll keep yoiu in mind if I find some if your still looking. My e-mail is [email protected]. I"d really like some pictures of your 500 series EWC wagons. I am restoreing one now. The model / serial number tag is missing and I"ve done a bunch of research on them. My hub numbers are Q 455 A, that cross checks to a model 540, 541 and wards 431. Mine has a rocking front bolster (not spring) set up and looks to be originally a blueish green color. I"m still trying to narrow it down farther.

I think those other guys are right. I grew up on a farm in northern IL and I had never seen one of these till a few weeks ago when I started doing a bunch of research on a EWC wagon I have. I'll attach an old 1947 add from Peru (IL) Wagon Co. bought out by Electric Wheel showing a model 499 wagon. I saw an Electric Wheel Co. Model 500 picture (or so it was labeled) that had this design as well.
