White 105 Wheel Wobble

Our 105 has a problem with rear wheel wobble - not side to side, but out of round. It is bad enough that it throws you around in the cab, starting at around 9 mph. As the tires turn you can see "high" spots. It originally had the power "adjust" rims - we replaced those with a standard rim. This helped the left side, but the right side was still bad. Next we put new tires on it. Now it seems the right side is better, but the left side is off!
Anyone have any ideas as to what the problem might be?

Tractor tires are always out of round to some degree. After sitting overnight they can develop a flat spot too that makes the ride really rough until they warm up.

If one side got better and the other side got worse just by changing tires, it's the tires.

Just to be sure you can measure the roundness of your rim by measuring the distance from the center of the axle out to the edge of the rim at each lug location, or any 8 to 12 points around the edge of the rim.

If the rim were causing "throw you around in the cab" problems you could SEE that it was oval just by looking. You would have had problems mounting the tire.

Thanks for your response.
I have measured the rims and they check out fine. I know what you are saying about tires not being perfect - looking at other tractors, when driving them down the road, I can see "high" spots and they ride fine. This tractor doesn't ride good at all - in fact it has broken the u-bolts in the past.

Are you sure that the axles are straight. Jack up one side at a time and run it in a lower gear. Use something that you can hold up to the axle end and watch it to see if it wobbles. The other thing could be a defective hub. Don"t do the jack up and run by yourself. You need someone to help on that job.

We had a similar problem with one of our 1855"s that had power adjusting rims on it. The best we could figure is that someone really screwed up the tightening of the rims after an adjustment. We basically fixed the problem finally by replacing the axle and the hub together. Until we did that, we would snap one or two u-bolts a year. Not a pretty sound when you are moving along and the u-bolt snaps. Haven"t had a problem since. It appears the hub and axle wore down from the initial wobble and it never went away until we replaced both.

Craig, I've spent hours trying to straighten those. Usually some inexperinced person put the rims on and tightened them down wrong. Does it have fluid in the tires? I've seen inexperienced tire jockies put on new tires and get the tubes wrapped around itself. Then they wonder why they cant can't get all the fluid back in the tire. This has happened more than once. You can spring rims out of round or side to side. Some times we had to replace the rims. There IS a right way an a wrong way to do it. Did you put used rims on the tractor. If so there is a good chance they were sprung before you got them. If they have the bolts and wedges holding them to cast hubs, try loosening the wedges all up at once and very carefully retighten them. Does it have the 2 cast blocks that arn't wedges? If so these should be tightened down first, and the rest of them are tightened a little at a time making sure they are not forcing the rim out of round. It may be too late, once the rims are sprung it is almost impossiable to save them. Good luck.
