Cockshutt 550?

Been looking for a cheap tractor to haul my firewood wagons for a while. A 550 gas just showed up at the auction yard, looks to be in decent shape, other than the tires are pretty much shot. I know nothing about Cockshutts - they are rare in this area. One of my books says this tractor was only made for one year - 1958? Can anyone offer any information on this tractor?

Well, yes and no. There was the Cockshutt 550, and then the Oliver/Cockshutt 550. One was a rebadged Oliver that was made for around 20 years, the other is the Cockshutt that is far more scarce. Got a picture?

They were made starting in 1958 with a few still made in 1962. Engine is a 198 cubic inch GO Hercules. They are in the 40 Horse power class. Tractor serial number is stamped in the frame on the right side. It will start 2 letters and then the number. It may or may not havr power steering and most I have seen have a 3 point hitch.
 
Does it look anything like this? This happens to be a diesel,NF,with 3pt hitch and power steering. One sweet tractor. I don't own it. I restored it for a friend.

It looks like the one in the picture, but with a wide front end - non adjustable. It has pins on the bottom of the differential for 3 pt, but no arms or apparent castings on the top for the lift mechanism. I didn"t look to see if it had power steering. It had an odd looking shifter - kinda like a tower, one stick but apparently dual ranges. There was an obvious LPTO level under the seat, and another smaller level that must have been for the PTO pump. But no outlets or anything.

Hard to find a Cockshutt with all the 3 point intact.I have 3 cockshutts and none have 3 point.The transmission has 6 forwards and 2 reverses.all on one shifter. Takes a little time to get used to shifting them. If the price is right, I'd buy it. I started out with one and I wish I had one of every model they made. They are great tractors.
 
It looks like it is a simple, rugged tractor. The weigh appears more than I would expect for a 40hp tractor. Are there any typical weak points or problems to look out for?

You must consider the age of this tractor and the fact that there hasn't been any produced for over 50 years.The Gemmer power steering gave some problems,but can be repaired. Seals leaking etc. are common with anything this age. Parts can be tough to find,but there are sources for most things. This doesn't really bother me. I'm not a farmer and don't use mine to work with, I'm a collector.
 
Thanks. I am aware of the issues with tractors of this age. I've owned a few, including a 59 Case I tried to restore and finally gave up on. Guess I will keep an eye out at the next auction and see how it goes - and how this tractor runs. What little I would use it - my main work tractor is a slightly newer IT utility - I only would need a few hours a year out of it.

As I said, they are rare around here - I only remember 2 being used in the neighborhood when I was growing up - maybe this won't bring much at auction.

Given the low numbers of Cockshutts produced and the fact that they were manufactured in Canada is the reason they are so scarce. There are very few in my neck of he woods too. I have a 35 Deluxe-Only 1850 were produced- A 570 Diesel -only 3100 Gas and Diesel were produced and the 550 you are looking at -2930 were produced. Between my dad, brother,and I, we have owned 5 of the 550s. The one I have now is a 1960 550 diesel.Of the 2930, less than 400 were diesel, and my 3 point is complete. We have all been very pleased.
