Oliver 1955 D

So what are some of the pro"s and con"s on the Oliver 1955. I am thinking about picking one up and would like a little incite. How good are the engines, how long before they need a rebuild? How long are the turbos goo for? Any trans problems.

the fact that you are asking about a 1955 means you are new to oliver. these tractors are kind of the black sheep of olivers. yes they have decent power, around 120. yet the motor on these are not that reliable. oliver put more power in the moter than it could handle. it is notorious for blowing the motor and throwing a rod, many owners convert to cummins. still with a lot of care and attention you can use the original motor.

If the motor has been rebuilt with the updates you should be fine. If it has never been worked on. Use caution. I have an 1855 and love it

Like said motors are known for trouble, someone must of put a turbo on, think the only oliver that had a factory turbo was a 1950t. Rather than the motor think the rest of the tractor is good, I like the over/under and there rear end is pretty good also.

Oh, never knew that, thought only the 1950t did, guess never owned a 1855 or 1955 or ever really been around one, ran a 1655, 1755 and 2255 before, guess you learn something new every day,

Just went and looked at my oliver brochures you are right, should of looked in them first, never nought they were though,

Yup, we've got an 1855. Never checked the serial number to see what year it is, but it's a later model. Puts out 105 HP on the dyno, and I love to hear that turbo. We just had the engine worked on a few years ago. The wrist pin bushings went out and we found out the prev. owner did a 1/2assed job during the overhaul, mixing bolts etc... Had 1 bad rod and it needed all new bearings, wrist pins, bushings, etc... and it was good to go again.

The 1955 didn't have the motor troubles that plagued the 1855, thanks to an oil cooler. One of the best of the 55 series, and very fuel efficient. No transmission problems, and if worried about condition of Turbo, I'd advise you take off the intake hose on turbo and see if you can find any oil residue.

Are these motor update still available? And is there anything from the outside of engine that would give it away?
Not new to the Oliver's we have 18 of them just new to the 1955. Just looking to step up a little.

you can look in the dipstick hole and see if it has the 12 point rod bolts. they are the good ones, Chuck

Pros: 3-speed, good rearend and brakes, decent hydraulics, fuel efficiency, sounds awesome (if you"re into that sort of thing).

Cons: 310 waukeshua turbo-diesel :( However, as others have said, the 1955 had an oil cooler on it which helped with it"s reputation. As you probably know, this engine is costly to rebuild and if it has had work done recently, be sure a reputable person did it!
