1600 steering

I am working on an early 1600 that the steering after the oil is warmed up will continously need to be steered at 1-2 rpm to keep it driving straight. I took the saginaw steering motor out and to a hydraulic shop they tested took it apart and said its wore too much to repair. I was looking online and see a few places offer a kit to convert it to a char-lynn system but its very expensive. Anybody that has any other options please let me know.

I think a lot of older combines had that same unit. Oliver 525,Massey 400-500,New Idea Uni Harvester.........

You'd just have to pull it out and compare. Don't know on that one. Wouldn't be surprised. So darned many parts were standard for different things back then.

You will have to make all the other parts to make things fit, that is why the kits are so expencive.I have done several both buying parts and just makeing what is needed. There are several pictures in the photos section on the left of this page. What ever you do make it strong guys pull hard on the steering wheel evan when not needed.Have new hoses made.

If you go to a salvage yard and get a hydra motor froom a 1650 they are much better and will not wander. There should not be very many changes

i had the same problem on my 1600 turned out that the seals in the steering gear out front were shot. it was a pretty cheap fix and something you may want to do anyway as long as it is apart

the hydraulic shop said the same thing so I had them check out the steering sector also but the problem was not in the sector. thanks for the reply.
