I am rebuilding or wanting to replace this engine.I
a have a detailed estimate on repair.I have found a
lot of reman D298erx37 complete engines on Ebay
around the Ohio area. The only difference I see is
the rear bell housing. The one out of the tractor is
for the mounting and has the rear main seal on it.Do
you know if this would interchange? They are listed
as military rebuild.
Thanks for the help!

I had occasion to compare the GO198 in my Cockshutt 35 to an industrial version- most of the peripherals were different (bigger carb, different bell housing, different governor, etc.) but if you have all the stuff from you tractor and just use pretty much the stripped block from the new one, it looked like it would work. But military might be a different story, don't know. Is there any way you could take a bunch of pics of yours, then go look at the replacement and compare?

There are good pics old and new,not sure if bolt pattern on block would be the same since new still has flywheel on it.Mine is more of a plate design with rear main seal attached than a bell hsg. design.Mine also is used for the mounting to the tractor.

most of those stile blocks are reversable. Simply by reversing the crank and cam shaft and all the external parts. You do have to change the cam gear though when you do that because youve changed the rotation direction. That being said you should be able to take your front mounting covers, rear mounting covers, and a few other parts and convert the engine. You still need to make sure it turns right way for your tractor, IE injection pump and cam shaft is on left side. What is wrong with your motor? What does it need to rebuild it? Irv

I just went through this on my 570. If you take a R.H. cam engine and make it a L.H. cam engine the crank and cam stay in place and turn the same way. It is the block that you are spinning 180 degrees. The oil pump drive gears are cut opposite on the camshaft. I found this out the hard way when I assembled my engine. I went to install the tach drive gear and it wouldnt go into the cam gear. I had to pull the cam out of my old engine and install it in the new one. I was able to use the timing gear but it was not marked for use in a L.H. cam engine. I had to count teeth and make my own mark. I also had to use the oil pump driven gear out of the old engine. Hope this clears it up for you.

I spun a main brg.The crank needs work and one new sleeve on that hole.To do it right I think I should sleeve all 6 or pistons on the other five.It needs new valves and injector cups. The head and block are fine.Oil pump seems ok.If I replace all 6 with new pistons and sleeves I am looking at $3200.00.This does not include new oil pump(extra $395.00.
Thank you for the answers.

The used tractor was new to me and used oil.I neglected to check oil on a busy summer and was working it hard pulling a belly dump from a ditch.I was on a side hill and low on oil.

After tear down I discovered blow by,1 or 2 exhaust ports 3/4 plugged with carbon.I think the engine was ready for overhaul. Some say not to weld a diesel crankshaft. The machine shop its at,say he has no problem.
Any more info would be appreciated.

Tony you are right, I was trying to keep it short and go from memory. My email is [email protected] for those who need it. phone 724-253-4285. Steve,I have heard very little issues with welding one jernal but all most every ones says never weld multiples or the whole thing. There are shops that claim to be able to do it but they also have to re-heat treat it. Where are you at? I mite be some help on those parts for a rebuild just depends on what you want to do. Irv

My 58 Cockshutt 570 came with a Military 298 on it when I bought it. You can use the rear mounting plate and flywheel from the tractor engine and bolt it right to the block, same style of rear main seal. This tractor now has the newer 3400 series engine which I would also recommend as a replacement. Again, all your tractor hardware will bolt right up. Hercules Engine Components website lists all the applications that these came in.

You can weld diesel cranks: HOWEVER the process is different than welding a plain jane steel crank. Where are you located? I can point you toward some shops that do diesel cranks. Years ago we had a crank welding class where I worked. We even had a special class once for the Cat people on welding 3406 Cat cranks. How can I contact you? I think your ER motor uses a larger wrist pin so that means different pistons and rods.
