880 Road gear?

(quoted from post at 20:05:02 03/15/13) Wouldn't surprise me our 66 is quiet slow, but fun to drive
That's awful, even the Super 88 is faster...makes an M look like a fighter jet. I see the one sent to NE was on 34" rubber, is that common? Seems to me by then a 15.5-38 or at least a 14.9-38 would have been appropriate.

I think the 3 digits are geared slightly lower than the Super series. My Super 88 has 14.9x38s and rpms around 2,000 and it runs about 15mph. I know my 880 was slower than that with 15.5s until I turned up the rpms over 2,000 and put on 16.9x38s now it runs right alongside or faster than my Super 88.

Johns:
I assume that you are a tractor ride guy.  Remember that there were two transmissions used in the 880.  Early had spur gear and the late had helical gears.  The Oliver Shop manual shows 13.05 for the row crop helical gear trans, spur gear is 12.86.

   The Industrial 880 is 16.8 MPH in 6th with 14 x 24" industrial tires.

Easy solution, find a complete 880 industrial transmission.  Install the axle housings from the row crop transmission, lets say with 13.6 x 38" rubber and that will add to your speed by 1.3 or to 21.8 MPH.

If you really want to go past the red boys and leave them in the dust, there are four gears from the industrial trans that you can install in your row crop housing.  Now the industrial has a 5.66:1 ring and pinion ratio and the row crop has 4.70:1 ratio.  Parts from the industrial, in your row crop housing and the larger tires and you will be at 26.16 MPH, hummm wind the engine up a little, if there is any breeze you are driving into guarantee your hat won't stay on.

Been there done that.  If we are talking about the spur gear trans you only need to change two gears.

The other green guys with their two shaft trancmission just have to make two gears that are in a housing between the two shafts behind the flywheel.  Case guys change the sprokets in their chain drive finals.

Yeah if it doesn't have 38 inch rubber you could change it out
and make it go a little faster, I take it you want one for tractor
rides? You can do what the guy who owns are case ih dealer
does and have the gears in the rear end machined, he has a
1206 farm all and a 1468 and a 1568 that all do 45mph.

No, not for rides, for actual use as a summer chore tractor, mowing spraying etc. Nice to have something that doesn't take all afternoon to get from one field to another.

Thanks for the tip Duane. Yes these are tractor ride tractors and I also do some plowing with them. My 880 is a spur gear. Can I use certain industrial gears and only speed up 5th & 6th gear?

I have a late 770 diesel that has flat top fenders and now has power steering off of a White 2-105. I installed 16.9X38 wheels and tires off of a 1655. They fit and look very nice on the tractor. It doesn't make the rear of the tractor sit any higher than the front and although I'm not sure of the road speed, it moves along plenty fast. I'm not sure of the rear end ratio, compared to an 880, but this was a slow 770 when it had 13.6x38's on it. It sure is fun to drive now in road gear.

Duane, how about the 1600 utility? I've been waiting for the pullers to want my old gasser for the ring and pinion and maybe 5th and 6th gear. Should be helical gears that are pressure lubed; or am I just daydreaming? Will they fit in a late 880? Would they fit in a 1650 and are they strong enough to hold up? Thanks for any reply.
