first off i have deere 2cylinders so i'm not too familiar with olivers other than the oliver 70. grandpa farmed with olivers years ago and he still has a 70 but he switched to deere tractors after they quit making olivers and we still farm with em today. in the a.m. i'm going to a sale with a friend who is interesed in a 550 there. this will be his first tractor and i am not familiar with the 550, can anyone clue me in on what to look at on the 550, was there any problem areas on em? thanks

Check for excessive steering play/looseness. Check if the PTO handle snaps the inside linkage over center when pushed all the way back, it should. Check the right side lift arm adjuster crank, it should turn easy with no load. Also if it has a swinging drawbar, remote hydraulic valve and power steering, that all makes it worth more.

Thanks Dick, we'll check those things out. grandpa said had a 550 with a loader years ago. he said he really liked the tractor, i think he just needed something bigger. equipment never seems to get smaller.

Read the attached article, It can be found on the left side of this site, Research and info, Articles, Maint and Mech, 550 purchaser's checklist.
The 550 is one of the absolute finest utility tractors out there. Owners that have them love them. Kicks the heck out of any Ford 8n that is commonly someone's 'first' tractor.
Good Luck and have fun!
