I purchased a 770 gas with a bad engine to have something to work on. I picked up a diesel engine from an 88 reasonable and want to repower the tractor with this. The response from my previous post stated that the 88 is a little longer and the shafts and coupler need to be shortened. Has anyone on this site repowered with a diesel? Any advise would be helpful. |

| you could slide the 88 engine forward the required amount and drill new motor mount holes in the frame\engine. that's what i did when i put a 310 in my 77, both the drive shaft and pto worked without cutting. you may have to slide the radiator forward a little and that can be done by simply drilling new holes in the fan shroud. i think if i had to do it again, i would take the fly wheel off the stock engine before i took it out of the tractor and take a piece of steel, lay it across the tub against the engine plate and drill and bolt it to the tub and then mark where the engine plate hits the new piece of steel for perfect alignment, then drill your new mount holes. you may have to notch the piece of steel that you are using for the alignment to clear the crankshaft. chuck ps, when i put the stock 77 engine back in the shafts were good to go |

| I re-powered my 57 super 55. I know that isn't the same as you have but it was really easy to do on mine. Took out a gas engine, put it in my 66 and installed a late diesel in the 55. I find that kind of work a lot of fun. |

| | I went the other way years ago. Put a 66 gas motor in a Super 55 that had been a diesel. I think you'll find that 770 motor is about an inch shorter than the 88 motor. Pretty sure the motor mount bolts line up,the difference should be the rear of the block behind the rear motor mounts. I think the larger issue is going to be the PTO long shaft. With just an inch of difference, you might have enough spline there on both ends of the driveshaft. It's possible that if it still ends up being a little too long,a machine shop could take a little off the end that goes in the clutch and pilot bearing. |
