Hey guys looking at different transfer pumps for Detroit Diesel. They list high output options with "radial" output or "axial" output. Whats the difference? Does one of these have the output next to the input and the other has the input or output on the side?

Hello johns,
Are you trying to get a higher volume fuel volume pump, or is the one on the engine bad.
The return orefice is put in the return line, matched to the engine and pump, so you can check
for proper volume. 1 gallon a minute as you said.
It does not serve any other function.
You can plug that return line to the tank, It will not make any difference on engine operation.
I know it is hard to believe, but back in the 70's we installed a fuel mileage computer in two of the fleet trucks. The computer was not able to measure return fuel, so it was plugged. One was a 71 series engine, the other was a 855 Cummins. Both ran fine, untill the system was taken off, and the return lines put back as they were. Guido.

Buzzin, probably not right away. I'm going to disconnect the return at the fuel tank and run it into a container and see if I can get 1 gallon a minute. If its over that I won't change the orfice.

Are you working on a 71 or a 53 and how many cylinders? also which side of the engine is the blower mounted? (or is a V type engine) Also remeber there are right hand and left hand rotation pumps just like there are right & left hand rotation engines. What fuel pressure do you have now?

John its on a Super 99 with the blower on the left. It has a LH rotation pump. I"ve been told the high output pumps with the 3/8" gear internals have a face with 1/2" pipe thread so as to put larger fuel lines on the pump. I want to make sure the engine is getting enough fuel to feed my new(larger) injectors.
