Anyone have any experiance with changing anything on a 478 Herc to get better fuel economy? I have had some with 40 and 50 series Deeres and did improve fuel consumption. Is there high compression pistons available, or different turbos or manifolds??

I've got the high compression 4 ring 22.5-1 pistons in mine. Maibach had them. Don't know if they have anymore, heard they had sold out. It starts like nobodys business since I put them in,but I don't know that it improved economy.

On the Deeres I have milled the block and sleeves to raise the piston height, then turn the piston to raise the upper ring height. This raises compresion but the hard way. If you raise the oppening pressure way up on the nozzles, advace the cam timing a degree or two and sometimes install a higher boost turbo you can get better economy. This doing the job the old school way. It is way easier to just buy parts that will do what you want done. I was just hoping I wasnt the first plow boy who liked the 478, But hated to pay the fuel bill.Seems like it doesnt care if you work its nuts off or baby it it still uses the same amount. I guess it to be close to 9-10 gallon a hour. At 4 bucks a gallon it adds up fast.

Ya,I posed a similar question a few weeks ago wondering if it would pay off to buy a 2-105 to use on the round baler and manure spreader. The consensus seemed to be that it would take an awful long time to recoup my cost,if I ever got it back at all. Still makes me half sick leading that big horse to water when I'm cleaning barns in the spring or baling hay though.

Has anyone ever tossed the idea around of installing a Inline Cat electronic into a white? Seems like most guys who are honest will tell you The I-H engines were alot better on fuel than most. How about a I-H DT436 or 466 in a 2-135/155 ? Tons of them in bone yards. I think finding a 466 with a #3 bell housing wouldnt be that tough..

They had a generator set at the Farm Science Review with one of those engines. It had an intercooler. Also remember you and I helped pay for the development of that engine and we all know the goverment has a credit card to buy fuel for them so to speak.

a 504 Case will make alot more power and torque and use less fuel than about any other farm engine out there, less rpm's with alot of torque helps it do that

My 1850 uses about half what the 2-135 uses. Not turboed though. So probably a good compairison to the 2-85. Didn't know if the 2-105 would use that much more than the 1850 or not.
