How much would you pay for this tractor?

Ok guys I am looking for another hay tractor in the 100hp range and came across this Oliver 1850 for sale and not sure what its worth. Don't know much about the tractor other than its an 1850 with the perkins diesel, has the over/under hydra-power, comes with a Westendorf TA-26 quick attach loader, tires are in the 30% range, also has a set of band duals for it (but only one good tire). Haven't had a chance to look at it so I'm not sure of the hours. Guys says it starts and runs good, doesn't burn oil, and doesn't leak too much.

Well.......I'd put the tractor with the duals at $5000-5500. The loader at $2500-3000. If you can get it for $7500-8000 I'd think it's a good deal. The 1850 diesel was definately one of Olivers top 5 ever in my book.

When the weather breaks I'm going to go take a look at it. What should I look out for on the Oliver? Any common problems to look for?

Also he isn't sure if it has the dual speed PTO. How would I tell if the internal parts are their to shift to 1000rpm?

As far as what to look for,it would depend on whether it's an early one or late one. Early one was most likely a 2 speed hydrapower, late might be a 3 speed Over/Under. I'd just check that to make sure it's shifting. Either way,it will go in to free wheeling in under drive. They tend to hang up in gear and shift out hard in direct or overdrive, that's normal, just the way the unit's made. When that happens, you just pull them in to underdrive.
The dual speed PTO will have a shift rod sticking out a little bit in the far lower right hand corner of the housing. There's a set screw with a locknut going up from the bottom to hold it in place.

Just normal wear and tear is about all there is to look for. That one looks pretty sharp in the picture.

I agree with rrlund on price. Westendorf makes a top quality loader. The fender fuel tanks are nice to have. When you said it has it has an over/under are you saying it has the three speeds(over, under, direct)? The late 1850s had this and to me it is worth more than the two speed hydra-power on the earlier 1850s. One question, wheres the exhaust/muffler? The 1850 is one of the best Olivers made.

you can see the Hydra-Power Drive decal right on the side of the tractor- I'd think it has the 2 speed in it then. The muffler is right there- its the optional quiet oval muffler (commonly found on the 1755's). The 1850 is a good tractor- keep in mind the price of new rubber though!

Do they have a price posted or is it one of those make me an offer deals? I just bought a late 1850 dsl. with over/under in fair shape for $3500, rear tires are not great, I put my WL40 loadr on it and I wouldn't sell the loader for less than $2000. By rights it ought to be worth atleast $6500 to $7500 if not more.

Without looking at he told me is is looking for 5000 for it. It just has the 2 speed under/direct. Would have went and looked at it today but the windchill is about -30* so it isn't exactly tractor buying weather.

The first thing I would check is the condition of the finals. Bring along a 5 gal bucket and some tools to grab some oil samples. You need to remove the finals drain plug by sliding the drawbar out of the way. Look for water and metal, you should see this by dropping less than a cupful. Another method is cutting open the finals oil filter above the axle on the left side. Use a tin snips and cut over your bucket and the mess isn't too bad. You'll need to bring a replacement filter (NAPA or AutoZone has them for not many $). Rotten shift lever boots can cause a lot of grief sometimes.

With a solid final drive package, functional hydraulics, 3 sp pto, and 11-15 front tires plus the FIL this is a fair price IMO. I noticed that it has adjustable wheels which is a benefit also.

I have 2 1850's and they are super haying machines and not too bad on fuel also. The 2 speed gives you a selection of gear ratios that is near perfect. The accumulated hrs don't mean too much if the tractor has been taken care of.

Good Luck.

I think I would go look pretty soon or somebody else will buy it for 5K. The tractor in decent shape should bring that w/out the loader.

Sent me some more pictures of the tractor. Looks good in the pictures. How hard is it on the 1850 to plumb the loader to a power beyond setup instead of off the remotes? Also in this picture it looks like I can make the shifter for the 540/1000 shifter...? Also there is a handle on the right hand side with a bungee cord on it whats that for?

The lever on the right side is for the pto clutch. Like almost every Oliver I've been around the pto will turn unless it is hooked to something or tied back like you see in the picture.

It appears you are pretty much just buying a new loader. If you want the tractor, I would go and put some money down on it.

when you mean for hay are you using it as a loader tractor moving round bales and the like. if you are heres just a little warning. i don't think the 1850 front axles can handle some of todays round bale sizes because we would put the loader on our 1850-t sometimes to move bales but we have broken a few front axles because of the weight of the bales. i also admit the hydraulics could have been better.

Mainly looking for a tractor to run my round and square baler and maybe to run the backup haybine. I have two other loader tractors and a backhoe to move my 1500lbs bales with but I would most likely use it to move bales from time to time.

Wasn't really looking for a loader tractor but this came along and figure another loader couldn't hurt.

Hard to believe someone would sell this for $5000 with that loader
unless there is a big problem somewhere. Why would they price it
that low for an internet sale without finding out the value of other
comparable tractors via other internet sales? Smells fishy. Good
luck!

Not really an internet deal. I was at the local auto parts store chewing the fat with the store owner, and I mentioned that I was looking for a tractor. He told me about this guy and took my name/number and passed it along. The tractor owner called me and then emailed me some pictures. Going to go take a look at it in the next few days but I'm waiting for the weather to clear. Got 8" of snow last night and its 0*F out so kind of ugly.
