As a starting point (apologise for the puns) I always set the timing with the piston just beyond TDC when the mag impulse trips. It will run no bother at that and you don't get a bad arm/shoulder from kick-backs (mine are all hand cranked). A xenon light, once the engine is running OK, can be used to fine tune the timing, if required.

Correct mag timing is 14 degrees or 1 15/16 inches before top dead center, which is the same as "SPK" mark on the flywheel. Before installing mag make sure rotor is timed to drive gear. Turn drive coupling in opposite direction of normal rotation until white line on rotor shows in center of distributor cap window If flywheel "SPK" mark is in center of bellhousing timing hole, mag coupling should align with hole.

Does your hg have a mag? If so is it a model C or model X mag?

Fireing order is 1243 and front is number 1, but it will run with the rear as number one.

thanks larry for reply, should have been more specific,,, try to get pics/info as what/where the timmng marks, [pins] would be in reference to cam and dist postition, seems like we can"t get markings alined..without tearning into front end to see if gears have been messed with...bob

If the lugs on the mag drive are in the wrong place when at tdc, then you don't have enough twist on the mag to get timeing right.I think the lugs need to be crossways.Someone help me out if wrong.
