1850 vs 1855 engines

Ever wonder why oliver was changing engine suppliers on this tractor from Waukesha in the 1800 to the Perkins in the 1850 back to Waukesha in the 1855 and then Perkins again in the 2-85? They still used the Waukesha in the white 2-70 as late as 1982 with that being the only Waukesha engine used at that time.

i don't know if this is true or not but i was told, and it seemed like a good answer, that when white really started taking charge of oliver they wanted to reduce some of there spending on motors so they ditched the perkins and tryed to juice the 310. now that we are on the subject i wonder why they never used the hercules motors that were in the 20-2150's in the 55 series because they only used the waukeshas and Minn-Mo engines until the 2255 and those hercules engines were a part of white motors.

I was told that Oliver wanted a reliable 100hp engine for the 1850.Waukesha couldn't deliver but Perkins could. Then when the 310 turbo came out they had a 100 hp engine. Oliver should have stayed with the Perkins. As for Hercules I have been told that they could sell about every engine to the Military. Lot's of 6x6 trucks going to Vietnam in the late 60's.
