Convert 2-135 to r-134

Would like to fix the A/C on my 2-135. The R-12 system has not worked for several years. Is an upgrade kit available, or can I use a R-134 expansion valve from a newer White tractor, along with a different compressor, and receiver-dryer. Thanks Steve.

Check with an Agco dealer or a Dealer that sells Hy-Capacity. They have kits and parts you need to convert.

Converting it over isn't a big deal. You can use the old compressor if its good. You will have to change the oil in it. I would recommend a new dryer anyways. Change all the o-rings for good measure. Talk to any dealer or truck shop and they can help you out.

Repair the leaks remove all the old oil and install 134 oil and charge.

You can buy a kit at most auto parts stores. Just follow the instructions on the package.

There is a product called Freeze-12 which runs at the same pressure and provides similar performance to R-12. I have converted several systems from R-12 to R-134. The results have been marginal. R-134 runs at higher head pressures, and will toast some compressors designed for R12. A 400 psi cut out switch should be installed to protect the compressor and refrigerant hoses. The condensers designed for an R12 system do not provide cooling for R134. The result is reduced cooling capacity. To really convert an r12 system may require changing the condenser, compressor, and expansion valve. Or, just use your original system with Freeze 12 with no reduced performance.

If you install Freeze 12 in it no shop will ever want to work on the ac system. At the shop we need to recover all refrigerant before opening a system. If there is a mix like freeze12 in there we won't work on it since we would need a special recovery machine just for freeze 12. If you change to r134 you don't need to drain the oil out of the compressor, a little r12 oil is a good safety lube if the other oil or refrigerant gets too low. The r12 oil in the compressor won't travel with the r134, just stays in the compressor. HTH.
