77 flywheel

30.5s

ok, I bought a 77 this weekend that is already set up for pulling, motor bored & stroked. was told it has a diesel flywheel and starter, what is the advantage of this set up?

30.5s, the flywheel is the same as a gas, the ring gear is different. they probably used the diesel starter for the extra cranking power. chuck

thanks chuck, is there much difference between a 77 and 770 head, (valve size, cumbustion chamber)was thinking of pulling in div. 3 but dont know if 770 head is legal or worth the time and money to get one.

30.5, if you don't already have the 770 head, put the cost of the 770 head in the 77 head and you will be ahead of the game. you can put 880 valves in your 77 head and there is enough meat in the seats to just fit the 880 valves in and port or have someone port and polish it for you. i put 880 valves in my head this way about 30 years ago with good results. do you know the bore and stroke? can you post a pic. of the carb side of the engine? chuck

did you put both intake and exhaust in or just intakes? was told the crank was stroked an inch, with some rough measuring its 4.125 bore and 5.25 stroke. I forgot to take a pic of carb side but someone has done a little grinding on the outside of the block.

it's hard to believe that still has a stock head on it with all the other engine work done, yes do both the intake and exhaust valves and then open the ports, but don't go to far and hit water. an engine that size could use even bigger valves, maybe you should take it to a good machine shop and see how big of valves can be installed. chuck

yeah i was thinking of bigger valves anyway but first need to fix bottom end. had piston come apart another cracked, one wrist pin turned into a full floating one, it has cast sleeves now and gonna make new outta steel and use a nice full skirt piston. i think it had a 770 head on it at one time when talking with the owner.
