I am changing the hydraulic oil in my 1550 and wonder if I would get better performance by changing to ATF type A as recomended in the owners manual.Any ideas?

I wouldn't. I'd use Mercon/Dexron combo in the HydraPower Drive, but not in the hydraulics.
Being the age that it is,I don't think it would hurt a thing if you added a few quarts of Lucas hydraulic oil booster and stop leak to the hydraulic oil. I put three quarters of a gallon in a Deere that had some seal leaks and it helped that one. Even seems to have boosted the pressure a little. I split the last quart between my 1850 and 1600. Figured it might seal up a few drips.
It won't matter if you use a hytran type hydraulic oil,or just a good grade of straight hydraulic oil otherwise. I use the hytran type in mine just because I only want to keep one type around and need it for other tractors that do need that type.
