880 oliver transmission

1960 880 oliver with(helical gear) transmission. When I put it in 5th gear let out clutch everything is ok until I pull back on throttle, then it starts to make a clanking noise and the tractor shutters like it wants to come out of gear. Only does this in 5th gear all other gears seem fine.Possible broken teeth on gear? Possible something worn on shifter rods?

Remember that the gears are always in mesh. I would take the hydraulic unit off(remove PTO first) and see how much endplay you have in the top shaft. Has the lube pump package been added to the transmission? Does it have a power booster? Did you drain the transmission and here pieces falling in the oil?
