6 cyl. gas. Built in hydraulics. Has a leaver that
operates it and another leaver that might operate
the PTO. i don"t know what that is for. I parked it last spring. Started it today. Started first time around. Runs beautiful. Will not move. Put it into gear and nothing. Took the cover plate off and the trans is moving and it shifts. The gears will grind if you do not put the clutch in. Cannot even tow it. Made no noise. No crunch. No pop, no bang, no lurch forward. It did nothing. Clutch is fine. I"m thinking it might be frozen but if it was the motor should stall. If you pull hard on the leaver by the PTO, i think that is what it"s for you can stall the engine. any ideas ? Thanks in advance. greg [email protected].

I can recall once a long time my 50 got stuck between gears when shifting. And like you said it would stall the engine if I tried to engage the clutch. Can't recall if I had to open it up to free the shifter but I don't think so.
Your pto could be stuck with a piece of the brake disk caught in the gears. When I took my pto off I found some badly chewed up pieces of the brake disk that had obviously caught in the gears but luckily without damaging them. I'd take the pto off yours at least and see whats going on inside there.

The long lever would be the pto and the short lever coming out of the hyd reservoir is the
hyd lever.

Thanks rusty but this tractor has no inside
brakes. They are on the outside protruding from
the case just ahead of the rear axle. Drums. They
are pinched on the edges by the pads. They will
not move. As you say it could be stuck between
gears. This tractor is an odd ball. Has 8 speeds
forward and 2 reverse speeds. The dual range is
controlled by the shifter. It has 2 "H" patterns.
I'm going to put the herman nelson on it today and
heat it up. It might be frozen. But if it is
frozen why does it not stall the engine if it is
in gear ? I'm thinking the pto is hydraulic. The
leaver is on a detent. You have to constantly hold
it to make it go. Does not mesh into gear like
my international Super H. I'll open the case plug
and if no oil comes out i guess it's frozen.
I'll let you know what happens. Thanks for your
prompt response.

I am new to cockshutt / co-op tractors but if I"m Right you have a 30 not a forty. If the steering shaft goes over the motor it is the 40 if it goes down by motors side that is a 30.

If it is a six cylinder gas engine it is a 40, no question. The brake I was referring to is the pto brake and you can't see it unless you unbolt the whole pto from the back of the tractor. Its not a big job but nice to have a helping hand when you want to line it back up to re-install.

It's a 40. Stamped on the left side of the frame.
Just ahead of the distributor. the steering shaft
goes over the top of the motor.

Your six speed transmission is no oddball. That is what all 40 and 50 tractors had and they are known to be a pretty durable unit. A nice thing about these tractors is how easy it is to open them up. Unbolt your hydraulic cover (the whole platform) and you can look right down into the final drives and see what is turning, broken, missing etc. Seat comes off with 4 studs. I'm assuming you don't have three point hitch or rockshaft?

think i found the problem or what could be the
problem. opened the drain plugs and nothing came
out. Put the heater to it this morning. Got a qt.
of water out of the transmission. About another
qt. of water out of the diff. and about 2 cup of
water out of the PTO. Took the heat off and will
let the water settle to the bottom. I'll heat it
up again tomorrow and drain again. That should fix
it ? I'll let you know tomorrow. Thanks for all
the responses and help from all. If it got to -40,
and it does here every winter ( normal ) i'm sure
the case would bust open if it wasn't drained.
Thanks again for the response. greg

right on the money. Don't have 3 point hitch but
there is a hitch for a mower or something like that I think. not a normal draw bar. Weird.
When all the water is drained i'll see if it will
move. don't want to do it today because if i do
all the remaining water will infuse into the oil.
Back to square one. Don't know what a rock shaft is but if you can let me know. Thanks again for all the help everyone.

If its just ice then you got lucky. Better make sure the rubber boot on the shifter is in good condition as that is where water usually gets in.
The rockshaft for a three point hitch would be in the two big iron loops under the seat behind the hydraulic reservoir. Every hydraulic platform had them but not many of the tractors out this way had the rockshaft and three point hitch. I had to build my own on the 40.

I agree with Rusty6. Your best to remove the PTO from the tractor. The PTO has it's own clutch in it. (live power) The tractor shouldn't stall when kicking in the PTO and water levels in the rear case normally don't get high enough. It is not that hard of a job to do and it may save you grief. You also can check to see if you got the nice heavy metalic PTO clutch or the wimpy abestos type. New Clutch Discs and Brake Rings are availble through international cockshutt club members.

That is surprising and good to hear that pto clutch disks are still available. I would not have expected it. This 40 had no pto or hydraulics when my dad bought it. Wreckers yard had plenty of them back in 67 so we soon had it equipped with both. Still got the bare cast plates that were replaced by hyd and pto systems. I also updated the 40 with disk brakes off an E5 Co-op.

All new clutches/brakes for all the Cockshutts I am pretty sure are all aval through Cockshutt club members.

Re: brake disk linings for the Cockshutts, I found out years ago that Case brake linings from the 7 and 830 tractors would also fit on Cockshutt disk brakes. Not the whole disk, the spline was not quite right, but the replaceable riveted linings were the same. So I could just take off the old worn out Cockshutt disk brake facings and re-rivet on the new Case linings. Not sure if the Case rivet-able linings are available anymore now.
