Hello Mr. J! 1850 crank pulley

Mr. J, I picked up my crank pulley today for the 1850 Perkins from the Houston Perkins dealer and it was an original replacement part as I had hoped. Thank you "wilma" for posting the proper Perkins part # (Perkins part # 31147232)in a previous post. I showed the balancer to the parts man, the guy I told you about that was seasoned and new his stuff and he claimed my balancer is good to go judging by nothing was rattling when i shook it side to side. I myself would rather have a machine or computer tell me that but ok. I got home and put the pulley / balancer assembly on and it fits tight as it should however when I ran the engine there was a pronounced wobble. Shut it down, bumped the engine a few times and the gap between the top of the motor mount and the pulley would be as thin as a note card or wide as an 1/16 inch. What is this indicating? Bent crank maybe? I may do a poor boy fix and pull the pulley back off and turn it 180 degrees to see if it's better. I may just put it on the trailer and haul it in to the shop. There are no out of the ordinary internal engine noises that I can tell such as a main or rod bearing.

That is as good as it gets.I purchased a new pully, insert and crank bolt for my 1850.Run it, mine has been that way for years. It will stretch out a couple fan belts a year, but hey I can live with it.If the engine dies she will get a new crankshaft.Scott

And you run it with the balancer bolted on I guess? Is it even possible to run it with it off? Seems like the weight of the balancer would amplify the vibration and eventually cause engine damage.

I had the same problem 2 years ago. Put a used assembly on and over tightened it a little. The dampener wobbled a little, but the the engine maded no unusual noise or vibrations. My neighbor used the tractor about 250 to 300 hours and it is still going.
I have a few 1850s still going and keep an engine or two ready to change. My thoughts were to see how long the engine with the wobbling dampener would run.

Put the balancer on and run it.Balancer absorbs vibrations. Those old girls are tough,I just did 14 acres of fall tillage today with my 1850.Scott

There is a tin oil slinger between the pulley
and the timing gear. It was probaly damaged
when the pulley was loose. Wont let the pulley
set flat on the gear.

Yea, I reached in there with a screw driver to see if there was any grease / grime to clean out and I could feel and hear a thin, round metal shim or something in there that I couldn't dig out. It seemed to be loose enough around the crank that it would sling. Now I know what its for. I'm gonna pull the pulley back off and turn it 180 next chance I get to see if it takes some of the misalignment out. Ran it for about an hour yesterday doing light work. Seemed OK to run but I'm not comfortable running it at high rpms with the wobble.
