Plow axle shaft worn - correct repair?

4340? hydraulic lift 3 wheel rubber, hubs are loose on axles. Pulled the land wheel hub off, reshimmed, everything looked good. Pulled the furrow wheel hub off, lube was a mix of grease, sand, and metal. Hub has chewed the shaft 1/4" at the inside edge, hub bearing surface is ground out, there was a split bearing installed at one time that I fished out of the grease pocket so this was an issue before.
I'm assuming the correct repair involves having the shaft welded and ground (no way anyone around here can lathe that big S curved shaft), and the hub bored and sleeved.

So, 1.What is the shaft made of? 2.I have a lathe and could bore the hub myself, anyone know where to buy sleeves (somehow I don't think my usual trick of machining down thick wall pipe is gonna work here), 3. Anyone know a shop in MI (I'm over by Port Huron) that can repair the axle?

Thanks!

Would it make more sense to just cut off the end of the spindle and weld on a new spindle and buy a new matching hub? You would have to be confident in your ability to run a good weld, but it would save you a ton of work. I could get you into a new hub, spindle, Timken bearings, and seal for around $100.

Interesting. We sold a ton of those plows. All we sold had the short shafts and anti-friction bearings. Maybe you could find one of those axles. The hubs are the same on a lot of Oliver implements. Maybe you could cut your axle off and convert it to the antifriction (Timken) bearing type.
