Oliver 88 diesel ?

Working on a Oliver 88 diesel. It is not running good at all. I thought the injector pump was shot. But I wanted to check timing just to make sure. It has a Bosch style pump. I took the plug out and rolled the engine over to the pump pointer and scribe mark on the gear. Then I went back to the flywheel and checked the marks it is almost lined up with the F.P. mark it seems like the pump might be off a tooth or so. Will that make it smoke nd run like crap. I am still thinking the pump needs checked. Any ideas?

Have you taken the exhaust manifold off so you can tell what cylinders are gining you the problem. On the injection pump, remember one plunger pumps the fuel to all 6 cylinders. Now on the pump timing. When you roll the engine around to F P does the pointer on the injection pump drive hub line up with the mark? Remember the mark in the timing window is a reference to make sure you are on #1 and not #6 and it is used as a mark to disassemble the pump. With that being said, you may need to flow time the pump. I also had a diesel in the shop one time that I could not get the pointer to line up with the mark on the pump shaft drive hub. Come to find out the piece with the timing mark was loose on the shaft. I did have to flow time that one.

I have not taken the manifold off . Whe you align the F.P. mark
The pointer on the pump is a little off maybe one tooth. J can you tell me a little more on flow timming. I honestly believe it is a tooth off on timming but it starts decent then surges. I just want to elimanate timming before pump overhaul.

To start with retime the pump. Crank it over to F. P. Then take the 2 screws out of the pump drive and turn the pump till the pointer lines up. There are many holes in the pump drive gear. Probably 40 years ago I calculated once how many degrees the timing would change, now do not remember how many degrees that was. Remember wear in the timing gears will also retard timing. You may need to advance it one set of holes. Confused? Do take that maniold off so you will know if several cylinders are the problem or if they all do. How about sticking valves?

From all this discussion I am thinking that Benlli is trying to time the pump through the window on the side of the pump. You must take out the pipe plug on the timing gear housing and look for the pointer and mark on the drive hub to time it, not the gear and pointer in the pump window.

Ba this pump only has a plug on the timing gear housing. It is an American Bosch style. I have timed a few rosamaster pumps they have the line in the pump cover. It just took me a little to find the pointer in the plug hole. I wish I had one of those small led flash lights. Thanks for all the help I ended taking the pump off getting ready to send it to the pump shop tomorrow.
