2150 FWA Clutch Application

I've pulled together most of the parts and pieces to swap out the old tired Herc in my 2150 with a new military multifuel engine. I have a newly rebuilt Bosch 100 inj pump (250 flywheel HP expected) to install on the engine. I'm building an O/U with the intent of being able to carry the additional HP. Having looked at the existing single disc clutch, I don't believe it will carry the HP (talked to the Southbend clutch guys and they agree), so I'm curious about what others have done with the single disc 14" clutch to withstand the additional HP on these tractors. Is this as simple as bolting in the double disc clutch from the 2-180, or do I have more work to do?

This tractor will not be used for pulling a sled. But will likely be hooked up to something that we probably shouldn't try pulling.
 
Good luck. It is not as easy as bolting in a 2-180 clutch. There isn't enough room in the bellhousing to accomadate the double disc like in the 2-180, 2255 and 2-150. We have a double disc in each of these tractors. Plus you need an input shaft out of a 2255 or such. Brad Maibach said you would have to make a spacer to put in between the flywheel housing and move the engine ahead which presents a boat load of issues. (pto shaft, rad and fan, etc). Anyhow I think it is A&I or HY Capacity that makes pulling clutches. They are just a super heavy duty Pressure plate and your left leg will know it. We also used an 8 pad clutch. That is what we did to 2 of our other tractors. One is a 2-105 with a 5.9 cummins missing the stop plate out of the injection pump. The other is a 2155 turboed with a 45 head in the injection pump. With the single disc, you will probably tear the center out with that much Hp as our 2255 did with a 5000 gallon manure tanker behind it. A heavy duty clutch would take around 235hp, 250 maybe stretching it. Curious what modifications you did to the the O/U.
 
Thanks, I was kinda hoping that you had a simple fix! Changing inputs shafts wouldn't be a problem, I have a couple of them laying around, but I hadn't thought about the spacer. What about machining the flywheel to take up some of the space? I don't have a feel for the difference in depth from the single disc to the double, is it 1/2 inch deeper or inches deeper? I have a few inches of radiator fan spacing, so that could actually help fix one problem. PTO shaft length sounds problematic.

On the O/U issue, I'm planning to go with the thinner Kolene steels and the extra frictions set up like in the 2-180 heavy duty. Gonna use overdrive frictions made to carry higher HP than the agco parts. Planning to shim the pressure up. It seems to look good laying in parts on my bench, we'll see how it works once I figure out how to get it bolted in the tractor.

I'll be pretty disappointed if we bolted it all together with the single disc clutch and ripped the center out before I figured out whether or not my O/U modifications were any good.
 
I wouldn't worry much about a longer PTO shaft. I have a shop I've used in Evansville Wi that helps local farmers out by making gears and shafts that are outragously expensive at the dealer. That shaft is stupid simple to make for the average gear shop. I'd specify making it from stressproof steel and induction harden the ends. But, maybe Dave (owner) might have some other ideas. If you get the steel yourself, and make it so all they have to do is hob both ends and induction harden the splines, you might even be in it for less than a new stock shaft.
 
The single disc clutch may hold together for quite some time. It lasted about 5 years with the 5000 gallon tanker behind it. The 2255 was making around 225 - 235 Hp. Our 2-150 is more than 2255. Both O/U's only have the pressure turned up. Believe me these tractors have been used hard. I have the engine out of my 2-180 right now. I measured the distance from the flywheel to the rear of the PPA. It is ~4 1/2 inches. You may be able to cut enough off the flywheel to make it work. There is only about 1/2 to 1" difference between the single and double disc clutches. You would still need the long input shaft in the O/U and get that machined. Another option I'm gonna try for a double disc is using an intermediate plate out of an eaton 14" clutch like in a GMC topkick with a diesel in. This plate will bolt between your PPA and flywheel. You just need 2 discs without dampening springs and machine the hub. In order to get the PPA fingers to the proper height you would may have to machine the outter ring. This would only be a 1" addition. I'm not sure this will work in your 2150 but in a 2255 I think it will. The 2-180 double disc is only 13", not 14. Hope this helps.
