1850 perkins harmonic balancer

Was working this 1850 when suddenly I could feel a little vibration, a burning smell, checked guages and engine was getting hotter than normal according to guage, but not boiling over hot. Oil pressure normal. Noticed the fan not turning, shut it down and spun the fan and it spins freely with the harmonic balancer as if its not attached to the crank shaft. Is there a key that fell out? stripped splines? What would couse the h/b to spin independent of the crank? Thanks for any help.

We had this happen to our 1850 several years ago. I was just just discing away and felt the vibration as you said, then just happen to look at the side of the engine and noticed the fan not turning. Long story short, the splines are stripped on the nose of the crank and there is only one true repair. Better start lookin for a crank.

Is the bolt still in it? I changed the motor in mine several years ago and shortly after, mine came loose. It's hard as heck to get that thing as tight as it should be. There's a round, splined wedge that goes in behind the bolt to hold the balancer tight.

I reached down into the center of the h/b with my finger looking for a bolt head or a threaded hole but found neither. It was still to hot to mess with at the time and I had to put it off til tomorow. Is it possible the h/b has a rubber or plastic type insert in it that wore out and is not moving over the crank after all? I am pulling it apart in the morning. Any suggestions are appreciated!

Ya,that whole thing's kind of a rubber dampner.
There should be a big bolt that holds that on though. Takes about an inch and an eight wrench. I got lucky and mine layed down in the front of the frame.

I had one of those cranks, think the scrapper gave me a $2 bill for it when I turned it in. Still looking for a new crankshaft pulley for mine to put on the new crankshaft.
