Oliver 70 transmission

I own a 1940 Oliver 70 Standard with a dual range 4 speed tranny. I also own a 1946 Oliver 70 row crop with a dual range 6 speed. In oder to upgrade the Standard 70, I believe I can exchange the entire tranny/diff but this tractor is completely restored so the question is: can the gearing inerts be switched or is there a difference in the casting?

the rowcrop rear end will bolt right up to the standard, change the axils and steering box and go, however the rowcrop has a slower ring and pinion than the standard so it wont go as fast if you go that route, great tractor for a slow tractor race! everything should swap as far as gears go if you decide to go that direction. But,, dont they all have six speeds but the top two are blocked out on the steel wheel tractors??Im sure some one will read this and have the answer.

extra gears could be blocked out. the hp 70 i have ithought the same thing, that thegears werent there, or blocked out . was ready to switch rear end to get extra gears. somehow we checked where there wasnt supposed to be gears like the 6speed. the extra gears were there. they just werent marked on the shifting pattern.

I believe you are making your problem harder than necessary. Your 70 Standard transmission either has the 5/6 gear installed and is blocked out or if it does not have the 5/6 gear,it will accept a 5/6 gear. Find a late model 70 in salvage and get the 5/6 gear and install it in your tractor.
In the 1940s Oliver had a Kit to add the 5/6 gear to early 70s, including the Hart Parr 70s. In addition to the gear, the kit included the parts to ad a master brake pedal.
Does your 70 Standard have a master brake? It will be more difficult to find a salvaged Std 70. I believe an Industrial 70 master brake will also bolt onto your Std 70.
