Just getting the '59 550 to the point of doing some work, hooked up my finish mower, the PTO will not run unless I push back hard on the lever. When the knob on top of the lever is pressed so the lever can move back it just seems to be connected to nothing.. Is there a spring missing that should press the lever back or something way out of adjustment? Any help would be appreciated.

When you push the knob down it will lower a flat piece of metal at the bottom that will allow the lever to move towards the rear. To lock in the pto it will sort of snap into the rear post ion and pto will stay engaged. Now if it will not do that it will need adjustment or worse case maybe overhaul the pto. If you are going to keep and use this you should really get a service book and I highly recommend a parts book also and a operators manual would not hurt either. Its a great all around tractor.

Your PTO clutchis an overcenter clutch. Do you feel and hear with the engine off snap over center? There is a plate on the bottom held on with 4, 1/4 inch capscrews. Look in there and have someone move the handle and see what happens when the handle is moved.

Thanks for your prompt replies
I found a manual and took the inspection plate off and can see what needs to adjusted. Am sure it will need more than adjusting. There seems to be no botom to this money pit.
Thanks again, Harry
