i have an oliver 77 that will miss and sometimes backfire, when it runs smooth it runs really good. it will usually run 4 or 5 minutes before it will start to miss again, eventually shutting itself off, it will start right back up, sometimes running good, sometimes not... it has a 12 volt battery and 12 volt alternator. does it need to be reduced to 6? |

| The coil has two terminals marked + and -.
On a 6V positive ground system, the - side is connected to the power coming from the ignition switch. The + terminal connects to the distributor.
To "change polarity" all you do is swap which wire is connected to the + and - terminals on the coil. The - terminal now connects to the distributor, and the + wire goes back to the ignition switch.
Do you have a ballast resistor installed in the wire between the ignition switch and the coil?
If not, you are burning up coils. |

| do you have new plug wires on it? if not maybe your coil wire is bad, also check over your wires for the ignition system. I got a Oliver Hart-Parr 70 that I switch to 12 volt and all I did was switch the polarity on the coil. and haven't had a problem, the coil cracked on me (left ignition on after I ran out of gas) and leaked out some of the oil and it still works just fine. |

| i think the wires are in pretty good shape, my coil is also cracked but i took the coil off of our 66 and still did the same thing, how do u change the polarity on the coil |

| Yes: That is why they cut the voltage back to 6. If you are using an alternator did you change the polarity on the coil? |

| The wire that goes from the coil to the distributor must always be hooked to the post that has the same marking as the ground on the tractor(negative ground negative post? You also need a 12 volt coil or an external resistor. |

| i picked up a tune up kit, it was the wrong points, changed the condenser cleaned up the points, seemed to have good spark, i suppose i could take the points off the 66 and try that |

| could the points be bad even after we cleaned them up, gapped them0.20 rolled it over and watched them spark. would the 12 volt burn them out faster? |

| i put the carberator off of the 66 onto the 77 it ran excellent for about 4 to 5 minutes, then started to miss and stutter, when i start it the amp gauge goes past 20 |
