I rebuilt the PTO clutch pack with new disks on an Oliver 770. I installed the shims for new disks according to my shop manual. The lever is very easy to engage (too easy) and seems to travel further ahead than it should. You can "feel" the point where it should snap over center but the lever doesn't stay ahead on its own (goes all the way forward but doesn't stay there on its own). There is NOT a nice snap when you release the lever, but when you dis-engage it, the PTO shaft does stop turning. When disengaged, there seems to be a little noise that isn't normal in the PTO bellhousing. (Has new gear oil and is full to the check plug). I did not replace the three little springs on the pressure plate but aren't those only to help with disengaging the clutch disks? (which it disengages fine) Could this be caused by the throwout bearing and the lever forks both being really worn and having too much slop? Any other ideas and advice? |

Have you checked that the pin that connects the lever to the release shaft and the key that connects the throwout fork to the shaft are not sheared?

I finally got the cover off and found the key (thick washer) on the fork to shaft was sheared in half. Put a new one in and all is well. THANKS for the idea!!

Sounds like too many shims in the pacs. It should take about 35 pounds of effort at the end of the handle to snap the handle overcenter

I had three less shims in place and everything was pretty much the same. According to the shop manual, it should have 18 brass shims and 4 steel ones with new clutches. Out of the 2 parts PTOs I have, I found no steel shims, so I used 22 brass shims and that should have been really close to the original thickness. The roll/tension pin the handle to shaft is good, I will have to pull the bellhousing and check for the key on the forks at the shaft. If the key is good, do I go to like 15 shims or is it fork/throwout wear?
