I am restroing my 1960 Oliver 880. It was original paint w/3800 hrs and the thing I noticed was it had a black starter. After some investigation, I learned from an old dealer that before White Corp. bought Oliver in 1960, there was an incentive program to get more of the 3-series tractors in front of the public. Oliver would leave inventory at certain dealers, property of Oliver until the tractor was sold. The details included that the dealer was not to operate the tractor until the buyer took delivery, thus the non-typical starter. Oliver could re-claim their tractor at any time until it was paid for. With this in mind, I am having the starter painted black again. Any one else ever heard of this?

Mr Fleming, i have an original 770-880 owners manual that is in black and white, but you can tell what is green and what is black quite clearly. heres what i see, the shifter boots and hyd. boots are green, all the wires seem to be green, all shift, pto and hyd. knobs are black. hood grommet for the air cleaner looks painted green, radiator hoses and clamps are painted green, starter, gen., voltage reg., distributor and dist. cap are green.sediment bowel and housing are not painted. carb and hose [spiral type] to air cleaner are green. intake and exhaust manifolds look to painted silver. the olver rowcrop on the axle housings is green, not yellow or white. hope this helps, chuck

OK, now with that all said, I have another small problem: I am replacing all the wires, belts, hoses and rubbers (air intake and fuel tank gromnets, seat springs and bottom seat stop) To that end, should I paint the spark plug wires, air breather to carb hose, seat rubbers and gomnets meadow green? Keep in mind I was going to leave all those items (including the starter/repainted black) black.

Something is missing from the story, such as...

"The details included that the dealer was not to operate the tractor until the buyer took delivery," so they shipped the tractors WITHOUT STARTERS to prevent them from being operated. When the tractor was sold, the dealer would install a starter from parts as part of dealer prep.

The starter would have been green when the tractor left Charles City as a new tractor. Someone needed a new starter and there may not have been one in inventory close by so they took that one off and replaced it and it was not repained. Dealer east of us had tractors on the lot that were company tractors other dealers could pick up and in the busy season some of those got robbed of parts and then replaced later.

The starter repair place my father used allways painted a repaired starter black no matter what color it came in.

The rebuilder wanted to repaint the one off my 1850 a few weeks ago. I told them not to. I wanted it original,so they left it like it was.

That doesn't really explain why the starter was black. I don't doubt that some dealers had 'floor plan' tractors, but why paint a starter black? I think perhaps you have a starter that was either a new one, rebuilt, or repaired. That seems more reasonable.

Never heard that story before but to me a Delco starter should be black on everything you find it on. my.02.
