550 Power Steering Questions?

Hello all,
I have a 1964(?) Oliver 550 gas with power steering. Originally it had the separate belt driven pump mounted above the generator. It has the side mounted steering cylinders. The original PS pump and brackets etc. were missing from the tractor when I bought it. It had another PS pump that someone cobbled on and the PS hoses got cobbled up when they adapted to the “new” pump. The set up I now have is the older or 1st style PS pump mounted behind the generator. I’m trying to figure out how to plumb this and check the integrity of this used PS pump.

My questions are:
Which port is which? The PS pump pumps fluid from the small port when I turn the engine over with the starter. Is that correct? Is the small port the pressure port and the large port the return port?
What should the pressure for this pump be? 950 PSI to 1050 PSI?

Thanks for any help you may have.
Take Care, John

This is correct: The PS pump pumps fluid from the small port when I turn the engine over with the starter. Is that correct? Is the small port the pressure port and the large port the return port? If it was mine I would go with the second belt type pump. Also see my post down a couple about the filter on the man's 880. J.

The port size is actually a good rule of thumb on all hydraulic pumps- some will have both ports the same size, but if one port is smaller than the other, the small one will be the hot port, and the larger one the return.
