88 pto will not go in all the way

trying to put a pto shaft in a 1951 88. It goes in all the way up to about 3 inches to go and is a dead stop....HELP!!!....

Probably the splines for the drive are not lining up with the hub on the flywheel. Try spinning the PTO clutch as you push it in, or twist the top of the clutch back toward yourself so that the splines are lifted up. It should line Up eventually, and pulling out the shaft and greasing the splines may not hurt either.

Did you by change have the hydraulic unit off and have the pump apart? The pump drive gear must be installed with the spline forward, otherwise the PTO shaft will not go all the way in.
