so dad and i are starting another project, looking to build a tractor for a 5000 lb v8 hot rod class and would kinda like to build an oliver, found a guy with a rough 770 with a seized motor looking like a good possibility, probably lookin at 375- 400 horse, will the under/over take it? how tough is the transmission and rear end? any help would be appreciated!!

should mention the tractor of choice seems to be a massy 44 or farmall m, there is a guy in this class with a 88 non super and that seems to hold up well

Hi You will want to forget about using that 2 speed. No good for what your wanting to do and they didn't hold up in the stock tractors anyway. Be better off in an 88 instead. 770 is probly not gonna take it. The 88's are holding up fair but still see some breakage. Stay away from the helical geared 880 also. You want a staight cut gear. Massey 44 would be a good choice. More room in the tub to get the engine down in. I stuck a ford 390 in an 880 12 years ago. Was fun for a couple years, but got real big $$$ real fast so I bailed.

I do not think the 770 will hold up to the V8 power, the 2 speed is out for sure, I have decided to use a 44 massey chassis and fab oliver body panels on it, I do like Masseys, but my heart is with Oliver

You might want to look at a Cockshutt 40,50 or Co-op e4 or e5, tough rearend, you see them in a lot of high hp pullers.

A stock power booster is no good to pull with. Why would a 88 rear end be better than a 770? Compare pioions, bull gears, and housing bushings?

ok so the under over out for sure, i don't have to worry about fitting in the tub as we really only need the rear end and sheet metal, allowed to build our own front frame. so general opinion is find an 88 or earlly 880 rear end? 770 rear isn't as tough?

i've seen what happens to a M, also just helped my buddy with a massy44 fix a lot of rear end pieces and i don't know much about olivers other than before we switched to case we were all ollivers and dad pulled an 88 back in the day so thats what i want to build. just wondering if this tractor has heavy enough parts or keep looking for a cheap 88 to start with??

I read this and I had a question. Since it will be a V8 how fast are you going to turn the V-8? Remember as RPM goes up the toque load on the gears goes down. Years ago a couple of guys around here had a Farmall H with a small block Chevie. A man walked up to them after they made a pull and said" how do you keep the transmission gears together? The answer they told the man who also had the same combination you are not turning enough RPM. Lot of truth in that statement. So what RPM are you going to tun it?

rpm limit is 6000 and i have several small block chevys from the roundy round days that will do that all day with the right heads intake and carb, i want to get as close as i can to the 6000 mark. i guess i should say 18.4-34 tires are what i have, 18.4-38 biggest tire you can have
