i have a550 D with a checker board grill
the tag is gone and i was woundering if anyone could tell about what year it was by the grill?

If you mean the 'egg crate" grill, it didn't start until the '60s. How about the engine serial number? That is stamped in the casting.

Look by the starter and get the 3 casting numbers. Then get the engine serial number as was suggested. It is stamped by the generator (or alternator if so equipped). The number will be eithe a 5 or 6 digit number. Start there. Also there were kits to update tractors in dealer inventory to the new grills.

Your tractor also has the Roosa Master injection pump. I would speculate that it is no older than 1963.
