550 Sleeve Replacement

I've laid hands on an old 550 engine to put into my Super 55. We're pulling it apart and the pistons (and most other components) look fine but the sleeves do not. We suspect that somebody has already done a partial motor job, perhaps replacing the pistons and simply honing the cylinder sleeves. However, the sleves do look worn and the pistons seem pretty loose in the sleeves. The question is this: I'm pretty sure the pistons are fine and I would simply like to replace the sleeves but I can't seem to find any parts suppliers that sell just the sleeves. Anybody know why this is the case or whether there is a source for sleeves only? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First of all. What is the bore size of your 550? Remember the early 550 and the Super 55 tractors were 3-1/2 inch bore. Later 550 engines are 3-5/8 bore. Plus you can buy after market 3-3/4 inch bore so what have you got. If your Super 55 is 3-1/2 inch bore and the outside of the sleeves are good have them bored to fit the 3.625 sleeves. Perfect Circle/Clevite sold the sleeves seperate at one time but have not for a few years.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm pretty sure the 550 motor is the larger bore already, so that's not going to be an option.

Thanks. I followed that lead and had a pretty good look through the AGCO website and their catalogues but no sign of Oliver sleeves.

I am always amazed to how much better so many peoples eyes are than mine. I see on ebay as well as on boards to where the crankshaft looks good. The pistons look good. The sleeves look good or as stated look worn.

Since I can not see that well I use bore gages and mic's. That takes all questons out of the looking good or bad.

Pistons can look good and still not measure up to specs. Cylinder bores can be honed to look good and still be out of spec.

Dick, your comments are noted. My father, who is a licensed automotive and industrial mechanic is the man chiefly responsible for this engine rebuild. When he says things "look good", I take him at his word. He has mic'ed the pistons: they are totally usable. The sleeves are less than acceptable. My question was simply whether anybody knew where we could find sleeves only. Sorry if my wording was not clear enough.

I cringe at the words (Looks Good) I emailed a fellow that was selling a used crankshaft that looked good. I emailed him and ask if he would measure it for me. He emailed me back and said that He would appreciate it if I didn't bid on his stuff because I was to picky.

I bought three never used pistons and sleeves that were 3 1/2" where one was used out of the kit. I was not able to find the fourth new sleeve and piston. I then bought a 3 3/4" kit for the engine.
My email is open if 3 1/2" is what you are after.
