Busted Tach for Oliver 550

Hello Friends - we have a 1962 Oliver 550 with a non-working tachometer. The dial end deflects when the cable is spun by hand, but there doesn't seem to be anything that makes a connection on the bottom end. Haven't taken that cowling apart yet. Any ideas? Thanks very much.

The way I read this the needle will move if you spin the cable. If so the problem is on the drive end by the distributor. If that is not correct what are you trying to tell us?

Yes, the needle on the dial will move when the cable is spun by hand. And so I believe the problem is on the drive end, but don't know the most probable cause. There doesn't seem to be anything to push the lower end of the cable into.

I had to replace my tach cable core once. About $11 I think at an AGCO dealer. There is a cable core inside that should have a square end on each end. Then there is a threaded collar on each end. One end screws to the back side of the tach, the other screws one down by the distributor. It is supposed to be pulled out and greased once in a while. Pull it out and check it.
