where do you find the ser. # on a 550 cockshutt i seen the one on the engine but that says engine number

The tractor serial number for your COCKSHUTT 550 (Brantford built) is punched into the flat top ledge of the front tub frame. Sitting on the tractor, it is on the right side, approx. mid way between the clutch cover and the rad. This is also position of the serial number on the 560, 570 and 570S tractors. The 540 serial number is in the same position on the LEFT (opposite) side.

For your application example: BM1295. B=550 model, M=1958 year, 1295= tractor production number.
