5.9L Cummins factory replacement engine

Hello all. I have been reading about and seeing a lot of guys putting Cummins engines into the 50 and 55 series Olivers. I know that these engines have tons of potential, but they may not be allowed to compete at some tractor pulls. My question is, did Oliver/White/AGCO ever publish or release an official letter stating that the 5.9L Cummins was a direct factory replacement in these Olivers? If so, which tractors would this apply to? Thanks in advance!

I saw a White 2-155 late 70's modle that had a factory cummins in it. I was told it was "optional" at the time. Cant say on the Oliver's or if they ever produced any literature about it, but I am far from an expert. I wish my 2-155 had one.

I really doubt it. Only one model (the 1850 Diesel that came with a Perkins engine originally) could be even close to a 'direct' replacement.

I don't think Oliver ever published anything on re-powering those tractor. I am sure B.A. Starr can answer your question for sure.

I do know that in 1983 Cummins printed several information sheets on their new "B" and "C" series of engines. I won't list them all, but one listed the dimensions of the 3, 4 and 6 cylinder "B" and the 6 cylinder "C" series engines.

Cummins also printed a brochure with an Oliver tractor on the front cover. It covered repowering the Oliver 1755, 1855, 1955 and 1950T tractors. This brochure had a list of 20 different steps (with pictures and drawings) on how to do it. There was also a list of 35 numbers that they called option numbers, but I think they were part numbers.

All of these papers have the Cummins logo on them, but there is also a listing for Cummins Great Lakes Inc. De Pere, WI. (1-800-236-9750) so I assume they were one of the dealers doing the re-power. It has been 27 years since this info was published, so I don't know if they are still in busness, or doing the re-powers.

If you have any questions, please direct them to the above company, not to me.

Thanks for the info. I'm just looking for any evidence that could justify putting a 5.9L into say, a 16 or 1755. We would plan on doing the repower ourselves and using the tractor for pulling only. It's pretty tough to compete against 466 ci IH's and JD's with a 310 turbo. Also, parts are more readily available for the Cummins. Thanks again!

Thats a very touchy subject, I see a lot of people arguing about it here in NY. I guess it would be like saying you could put a 5.9 in a farmall 560 because CIH maxxums ran them. And I remember years ago when those repower pamphlets came out the recomended engine for a 1750-55 was a 4 cylinder turbocharged. It depends on how much you thought you could get away with.

The answer is no. It is a nice conversion and it works well, but no olivers ever came from or were replaced from the factory with the Cummins engines.

There are some pictures of my 1850 Cummins powered tractor in front of the corn chopper above. That tractor is putting out right at 150 HP and that 790 chopper never even makes it break a sweat.

I have never heard of a "factory replacement" cummins for OLIVER or a "2" series White.I converted many 2-135 and 155"s after White started using the cummins in the 100 series.I don"t think the B series was even out in the 70"s.We made up our own conversions at our shop.I wish White would have done something factory,we had a lot of customers that had issues with the Hercules.

Shep, what cummins did you use and would it fit in a 1855 oliver/cockshutt?I say Cockshutt because there are more of them here in canada then olivers,at least where i live. Thanks Paul.

Cummins Great Lakes assembled the kits with parts mostly off the shelf to get to sell more engines. They did one tractor in house for the pictures, and I have that tractor. It came to the Farm Progress Show in Columbus Indiana in 1992. I talked to them around the year 2000, and they said most parts were available from NAPA or any Cummins dealer. Around the same time other comanys like Hunley's in Austin, IN started their own repower buisness so I don't know if they still deal with the kits or not.

Thanks for all of the useful information, gentlemen. I was just curious if the Cummins engine was an honest and justifiable engine option for an Oliver. We weren't planning on doing the repower unless it could be considered factory or replacement equipment. I guess we will just have to build a Waukesha if we want to play in the turbo classes. Thanks for all of the feedback.

I'm pretty sure the small "B" and "C" Cummins engines were developed by Case Tenneco and Cummins in the early 80s. Before that Cummins made big ol' truck engines like the big 250.
