When we put the tires on the 880 I seen the axal housing go up about 1/8 in before the axal moved on one side and not the other I ask the dealer and he said there were tapered roller bearings in there this would this make extra wining noise over the alredy noisy old style gear box 58 model
If I tare in to this will I have to set the rolling torke and backlash on the rear end or is that a diferent bearing all together I can see in the brake down there are shimms in there and do you have to pull the shifter to take the top off the rear end he said I had to pull the pto to get to the snapring on the axal
Trying to figur out if I want to try this or take it in use it alot in the winter the wagon pulls hard when the frost is going out I dont want to hurt the rearend from a mistake

1755, the play in the axle is adjusted by removing shimms from behind the axle housing cap on the outside behind the hub where the grease fitting is, if you are lucky you can cut and remove a couple of shimms to eliminate the play , cut them at the top in case you need to put one back in . it would be a good to get a shop manual . i think you meant the axle moved and not the axle housing. chuck

How much end play do you have? I would check that first and then if just a little say less than 0.020 remove shims. More than that I would pull the axle housing assembly and repair it. If you have a 50 year old 880, better take the cover off and look in there. When you drain the oil and here metal pieces fall in the oil you will know what I mean. Fix it before you chip a bull gear.

that is what I was afrade was going to happen I dont know what kind of end play it has I just seen it move I will have to look at the end play and see Going to check into $$ at the shop saterday
