I was wondering if someone that has switch from the genarator to the single wire alternator could help me out? i am doing this but keep getting live power. The big red wire on alternator goes back to the bat terminal on alternator but where does the other little wire go? Does it go back to the ignition switch somewhere or does it go to the positive side of the battery terminal? somebody told me to hook it up to the acc. terminal on ignition switch but then I get juice all the time and cant shut off tractor using the switch. Then I think i read that it should go back to positive side of battery terminal. could someone help me out please. thanks in advance.

Your question is a little confusing. Is this a one wire modified alternator or the original Delco 3 wire alternator? Your description sounds like the original 3 wire. Here is a basic connection diagram. Some installations us an "idiot light" in place of diode. Without this isolation the alternator feeds back and allows the tractor to continue to run when switch is off.

thank you. It is the delco alternator. I hook the white wire up to the ignition but like i said it keeps the tractor running and actually kicks the starter in early. I don't have the diode in place would that take care of my problems?

Install a diode (marked band toward alternator). That should make it shut down when switch is turned off. It can be installed anywhere in the wire between #1 on alternator plug and the ignition switch.

The diode is a one way device, passes current in one direction, blocks it the other way. This allows internal regulator to draw current from the battery to start the alternator charging, but blocks current from alternator back to the ignition circuit when switch is turned off.

Wires from alternator should have no effect on starter activation.

I found on my olivers that if I switch the 2 little wires on the alternator the tractor does stop when turned off and the charging system works. No light or diode needed. HTH. I have never tried a one wire on my olivers, have one on my L-8000 tow truck and it needs to be revved up to get the charging to start. My local alternator and starter shop said they don't like to put one wire alternators on some of the old tractors that don't run fast enough because they might not get enough rpm to get it charging. They like the 3 wire with a sender switch at the engine oil pressure port connected to the one small wire for the 12 volt feed to the field winding.
