550 carb ussues

My brother was cultivating his pumpkins with his 550 when it started running rough and then it wouldn't restart for him. He pulled the carb off and soaked it in my carb cleaner after taking it apart (not sure how far) and re assembled it, but the best we can manage is a couple pops or few seconds running and it quits again. All he has is the ever-so-not-informative I&T manual which has no information on where to set the carb.

I set the top screw to 1 1/2 turns out, same as the bottom, and fiddled with it a little either way from there, but no luck.

Anyone know where it needs to be set? I already suggested he find some real manuals for his 550 but it went in one ear & out the other.

I also told him to just buy a rebuild kit for it & I would then do it for him if he wanted me to. We'll see how far that goes.

You may want to check for a good flow of fuel at the inlet tube at the carb. Maybe a clogged line or filter? Are you sure it is a carb problem? How about a spark issue, points or cracked dist cap? Good luck!

Adjustments: Which model carburetor do you have? Do you hava vacuum gauge? Your load screw is not adjusted out far enough. Try 2 turns to start with. Dick has a good point. How is your fuel flow? Stick the fuel line in a clean 5 gallon bucket. Do you have a good strewam of fuel for a minimum of 5 minutes. Does it hava a viton needle and seat? Have you checked to se if the fuel bowl (craburetor fuel bowl) fills?

To be honest, he just assumed it was the carb and pulled it off, pulled it apart, and now I need to fix it for him. If it were up to me in the first place, I would have performed some of these tests, but I'm not gonna be going home for a few days now and I need to try and help him over the phone.

Not my idea of fun, or proper use of intelect, but I guess that's what family is for...

Hey Don. Another 550 brother story
I would check coil and coil wiring...I have had those tiny nuts come loose on the coil on my 550. Now have two nuts piggy-backed on each terminal to stop that.
Did it happen when fuel tank was low? Could be crap in the fuel line. Friend of mine had a wheat berry stuck in his fuel tank exit

The FIRST thing to do was to determine if it was ignition or fuel. Too late now, but as another said, check for a good blue spark, before wasting any more time and effort.

Don,

This is no exaggeration but I had a 1650 that did the same thing and it was a fly in the tank. It would settle over the outlet of the gas tank and plug off the flow to the carb.
