Brother found an Oliver plow

My brother found a 2 bottom Oliver 3240 plow (pretty sure that's what it is, the tag was gouged bad by the 3rd digit. Just looking by eye, it appears to be set for a 16" cut. Owner said he bought it from a man a while back who was the 1st owner, and he never used it but maybe 2x.

Apparantly he left out the part where he used the heck out of it without replacing wear parts such as the shins and landslides. The points looked to be replaced, however the plow couldn't have been set right because they appear to be worn funny. The front shin is worn so bad, that it cracked aftyer wearing thin and the guy kept running it so a gouge is worn into the moldboard behind the shin, probably 2' x 1 1/2" or so, maybe 1/8" deep. Probably gonna fill it in with weld and grind it smooth again.

Overall it doesn't look too bad once you look over some of the bubble gum welds on it and look at the basics of the plow. He'll clean it up some after replaceing some of the wear parts and getting it set up for his 550. Moldboards are pretty rusty, but if he listens to me some we just may get them shined up.

I think he paid $250 for it

Don,

I pull a 3-14 3241 with my 550. It's a perfect match. Mine is worn a bit but nothing like that. He'll have fun with it.

In our soil, that'd be wayyyyyyyy too much plow for a 550. We pull 4-16's with our 1855 which puts out 105 HP on the PTO. Pulled 3-16's with our 1755, although the 1600 had the job for many years and still gets hooked on once in a while. Pulls much easier than I would have thought, espescially that the tires don't have fluid anymore.

Yeah, we have a lot of sand and gravel on the farm here so its not too bad for tillage. Well with the 2 bottoms it might be better in your neck of the woods. Does your brother's 550 have any ballast to help it? I have wheel weights on all four tires and it helps a lot.

He's got fluid in the rears, and a loader hanging on the front. He wants to put on quick connect couplers so he can pull the H frame of the loader off and just leave the subframe attatched to lighten things up a little bit. I'm sure I'll have to help him set the plow up as he has no clue when it comes to that sort of thing.

For now he's just finding parts for it (the landslides espescially) and then he'll put the new parts on and see if he can turn some dirt.

The shins and points look to be the same as we run on our newer Oliver plows so he can find those locally, but the long landslides are a bit trickier to find. I think he found some through Shoup. He said he called them up and they had both long & short ones for that plow on hand.

That's good to know. Thanks for passing that along. I'm going to need to put some wear items on my plow soon. Selling one place and buying another so probably won't do any plowing this year.
