Oliver 550 Remote Hydraulics

Hello, I have an Oliver 550 with power steering and external hydraulic valve. The original power steering pump and brackets are gone. Has anyone used the tractors hydraulics in place of the power steering pump? I would like to tap into the tractors hydraulics and/or by pass the external valve to use for the power steering. Has anyone done this? If so any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, John

Why: We converted one over with A G-M style power steering pump. You did not say which style pump you had but I would think Kent may have brackets and other related parts. A small Cessna or John Barnes pump would be a good set up. Later 550 tractors used a setup like that.

A flow divider might make it work with a return to resovior, but the oil sent to the steering can't be used to power the rest of the system so it would be slow.

My recollection is that the tractor hydraulics only produce 5 or 6 GPM, so if you take out 3 for steering, the hydraulics won't be slow, they'll be glacial.

Reminds me of a review of a Mercedes diesel car back in the day- "This is not life in the slow lane; its life in the bike path."

Thanks for the replies.

After reading your replies I remember blocking the remote valve open to run my log splitter and noticing that the 3 point would not raise the splitter until I closed the remote.

Why? Because, I tried to locate the pump and brackets and had no luck. I also figured that using the existing hydraulics would be simpler and a lot less expensive. It would eliminate a pump, brackets, pulley(s), and belt(s). My Oliver 550 is a 1964. The original pump and brackets were not on the tractor when I bought it. I assume the pump was originally mounted over the generator since there is an access hole through the sheet metal there and someone cobbled a pump on in that location. It is not lined up well and does not stay in alignment so the belt keeps popping off. Who is Kent? I would like to stay original if I can and it’s not too expensive.

I am now thinking about installing a pump out front (crank). Has anyone done this? Who sells that type of setup? What all would I need (pump reservoir etc.)?

Thanks for your help, John
