Electronic ignition for Oliver 550

I want to change out the coil and distributor with an electronic ignition device. Does anyone know the problems I might incur doing this?

I am not getting any spark in the points, so either the coil or points are failing. Either way, I would like to try the electronic ignition if it will work and would not be too difficult to install.

Thanks,

David

Get it to work BEFORE swapping it over to EI, or you'll just add more unknowns to the "why's there no spark" mix.

Put a test light between the primary terminal on the distributor and ground and try to start it. What does the test light do.

Thanks for the thoughts: I will get the tractor running before converting. I don't know much about checking the coil or points. First, how do I determine if I have a neg ground system. Is it as simple as the neg terminal on the batt being grounded?

Second, is there a way to test the coil or points independently?

Thanks

Your question is pretty wide open, so I have attached a URL link to my Ignition Troubleshooting Procedure below. If you work through it you can determine if non firing is a points (so often the whole problem) or a coil or other problem. You need to first insure theres at least voltage getting to the coils input (NOT to distributor) terminal (tests ign switch and wiring and any ballast) and then with the poinst open insure theres voltage present on the coils output (see if coils primary is bad/open). Then check and clean and gap the points as necessary as that may be the whole problem.

Your test light should illuminate when touched to the switch side of the coil with key on AND while cranking.
Second-With your test light on the distributor side of the coil should flicker while cranking.
If it DOES flicker your points are working fine and you have a bad coil. If the test light does not flicker your points are not working.
